Buenos Aires
Driving low-carbon, inclusive and digital urban mobility solutions across Argentina.
Overview
Argentina ranks among the most urbanized nations worldwide, with 92% of its population living in urban areas, far exceeding the global average of 54% (CEPAL, 2017). This demographic concentration is centered on the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), which encompasses the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA) and 39 surrounding districts, including La Plata. Housing approximately 36% of the national population, the AMBA surpasses 16 million inhabitants across 13,267 km², making it the second largest urban agglomeration in South America and the 18th largest globally.
CABA serves as the country’s economic and financial center, sustained by the concentration of activities such as financial services, commerce, and technology. Owing to this interdependency, transport diagnosis and planning must be understood within a metropolitan context, extending the analysis of CABA to the entire AMBA to identify systemic challenges and opportunities.
